James Ray "Jim" Cottrell

James Ray Cottrell is a trial and appellate attorney who limits his practice to highly contested family law matters in the Commonwealth of Virginia. During the last 33 years, he has tried in the trial courts numerous cases involving every conceivable issue in that field and has numerous reported appellate cases which he has argued before the Virginia Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of Virginia. He is a former Chairman of the the Virginia State Bar Family Law Section's Board of Governors and served on various bar committees. Mr. Cottrell is a frequent lectuer at bar events and speaks annually to the advanced family law section at the University of Richmond Law School. Mr. Cottrell is also a co-author of the well regarded treatise, Virginia Family Law: Theory and Practice, and has been featured in several articles in magazines as a result of cases of well known individuals he has represented.
