    About Michael

    Michael E. Mooney is Nutter's managing partner. A tax attorney, he maintains an active tax and business practice. Michael represents corporations and other businesses in a broad range of domestic and international tax issues. He advises clients on all aspects of complex business combinations and divestitures, such as tax-free corporate reorganizations and spin-offs. Michael also assists individuals with personal tax planning and works with businesses and individuals in designing and implementing executive compensation programs. He has handled many successful tax controversies before the Internal Revenue Service and the Massachusetts Department of Revenue and Appellate Tax Board. He frequently works with family businesses to reorganize into more tax-efficient structures and provide for intergenerational transfers at minimal tax cost. Michael is a fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel, vice president, executive director and member of the Board of Directors of the Federal Tax Institute of New England Inc., a member of the Boston Tax Forum, and a member of the Board of Editors of Accounting and Financial Planning for Law Firms. He writes and speaks frequently on topics related to taxation and executive compensation. Active in many business, civic, and charitable organizations in Greater Boston, Michael is a director of Jobs for Massachusetts, an executive leadership organization of CEOs from prominent Boston businesses. He serves as chair of the Board of Directors of A Better City and is a former chair of its Membership Development Committee. He also served as co-chair of the Professional Services Division of the United Way of Massachusetts Bay 2002-2004 campaigns and is a founding co-chair of the Lawyers Leadership Breakfast, and is currently serving as a member of the Advisory Council, Legal Community, with United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley. He has served as legal counsel to the USS Constitution Bicentennial Salute, Inc. and Sail Boston 2000, Inc., and currently acts as legal counsel to Sail Boston 2009. For more then ten years Michael has been a co-chair of the Inner-City Scholarship Fund Annual Dinner, sponsored by the Catholic Charities. He is the founding chairman of the Boston Bar Association Summer Jobs Program, served as chair of the 2003 Law Day Dinner Steering Committee and co-chair of The 2008 Diversity and Leadership Task Force. He is a director of the Lincoln and Therese Filene Foundation and a former director of Music Lives, and a member of The Chief Executives’ Club of Boston. Michael is a member of the Business Advisory Council of Boston College Law School and a trustee of Lesley University. As managing partner, Michael is chairman of the firm's Executive Committee. He has also served as manager of the Tax Department and chair of the firm's International practice group.
