Mr. Swiger began his legal career after graduating from the Antonin Scalia Law School at George Mason University with a Juris Doctor degree, with Distinction, in 1981. Before law school, he was a four year scholarship football player at Villanova University where he played offensive center and earned his undergraduate degree. Following his legal education, Mr. Swiger worked as a law clerk to the United States District Court in Richmond, Virginia. Thereafter, he entered private practice and has primarily represented injured workers in Workers’ Compensation cases before the Virginia Workers’ Compensation Commission, the Court of Appeals of Virginia and the Supreme Court of Virginia. Mr. Swiger is also admitted to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, The United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and the Supreme Court of the United States. Mr. Swiger has consistently received an ”AV“ peer rating from Martindale-Hubbell. For several years, he was further honored by Martindale-Hubbell by being awarded a Peer Review Rating of "AV Preeminent" the "Highest Possible Rating in Both Legal Ability & Ethical Standards". Mr. Swiger has been named a ”Best Lawyer in America“ (2005-present). He was named a Virginia Super Lawyer for 2019. He is a member and serves on the Executive Committee of the Virginia Workers' Compensation Inn of Court. In 2019, Mr. Swiger was named a Fellow of the College of Workers' Compensation Lawyers. Jim and his wife, Vivian reside in Northern Virginia and are the proud parents of four children and five grandchildren. Mr. Swiger is an active participant in his Church and his Community.
