About John
John Libby leads Manatt’s investigations and white collar defense practice. He represents businesses, as well as their officers and directors, during criminal investigations and prosecutions, as well as complex civil litigation. Formerly an Assistant U.S. Attorney, he guides clients through the trial and appellate phases of complex disputes with both the government and with private parties for clients in the healthcare and financial services industries, among others. Working from the firm’s Los Angeles, New York and Washington D.C. offices, John defends companies — and their directors and officers — in government investigations and prosecutions. His white collar defense practice includes assisting clients in responding to search warrants, subpoenas and civil investigative demands; representing clients in grand jury and SEC testimony; negotiating pre- and post-indictment pleas and civil resolutions; and conducting post-charge proceedings, including motions, trials, sentencing and appeals. A significant part of John's practice involves conducting internal corporate investigations for corporations or their boards of directors in response to government inquiries or internal allegations of misconduct. Where appropriate, he also guides clients through the process of making voluntary disclosures of wrongdoing to government authorities. Working with other firm lawyers, John often assists in structuring transactions to comply with applicable laws, advises on compliance programs and conducts compliance training.
